- For years, the Kipunji was misidentified and only recognized as a new species after both local reports and camera trap evidence confirmed its existence.
- The Kipunji was the first new African monkey genus discovered in over 80 years. Its unique vocalizations include a loud 'honk-bark' call, which is not found in any other African monkey. The Kipunji's social structure is unusually complex for its genus, with multi-male, multi-female groups.
