Kipunji
Rungwecebus kipunji
Rungwecebus kipunji was discovered in 2003 - independently, and almost simultaneously, by two separate research teams working in different Tanzanian forests - and described in 2005, making it the first new African monkey genus identified in 83 years. It was initially placed in tโฆ
Did you know?
- For years, the Kipunji was misidentified and only recognized as a new species after both local reports and camera trap evidence confirmed its existence.
- The kipunji was known to local people as a crop raider for generations before science had any record of it, and researchers first learned of it from villagers' accounts. It is one of only two primate genera to be newly described in the twenty-first century. Its honk-bark call is loud, low-pitched and completely distinct from the calls of any related monkey, and it was that sound that first told the researchers they were dealing with something new.
