Klipspringer
Oreotragus oreotragus
Oreotragus oreotragus is a small antelope, barely 60 cm at the shoulder, that lives on cliffs, boulder fields and rock kopjes across eastern and southern Africa, and it walks on the very tips of its hooves - the hoof is cylindrical and blunt-ended, and the animal balances on a cโฆ
Did you know?
- Klipspringers are one of the very few antelope species that mate for life, typically living in monogamous pairs.
- The Afrikaans name means "rock jumper", and klipspringers can leap onto a ledge a fraction of the size of their own body with all four feet landing together. The hollow-hair coat was once used to stuff saddles, which nearly cost the species dearly in southern Africa. Klipspringer pairs are among the most faithful of all antelope, and the surviving partner of a bonded pair often takes a long time to re-pair.
