- Despite being called 'koala bears,' koalas are not bears at all—they are marsupials, carrying their young in a pouch.
- Koalas have a highly specialized digestive system that includes an enlarged cecum, allowing them to ferment the otherwise toxic eucalyptus leaves safely. Despite their sleepy reputation, spending up to 18-22 hours a day resting, koalas are surprisingly adept climbers, using their sharp claws and strong limbs to navigate the treetops. The koala's fingerprints are so similar to humans' that they can confuse crime scene investigations. Unlike most marsupials, koalas have a backward-facing pouch, which prevents the joey from falling out as the mother climbs.
