- Despite being called a river dolphin, the La Plata dolphin is the only river dolphin species that lives in the ocean as well as rivers.
- The La Plata dolphin has the longest beak relative to its body size of any cetacean, comprising up to 15% of its total length. It is unique among river dolphins for being found in both freshwater and marine habitats. These dolphins often swim and feed alone or in small groups rather than large pods.
