Lake sturgeon
Acipenser fulvescens
Acipenser fulvescens is a survivor of a lineage that predates most modern fish: sturgeon are cartilaginous-skeletoned bony fish armoured in rows of bony plates called scutes, with a heterocercal shark-like tail and a mouth on the underside of the head that fires out as a protrusβ¦
Did you know?
- Despite their massive size and prehistoric appearance, lake sturgeon are harmless to humans and feed primarily on small invertebrates found in the sediment.
- Lake sturgeon leap clear of the water, sometimes repeatedly, for reasons still argued over - swim bladder regulation, communication and parasite removal have all been proposed. Their scutes are sharp in young fish and wear smooth with age, and the fish's skin has no true scales. Because a female may need a quarter of a century to breed for the first time, a river's sturgeon population can look stable for decades after it has actually stopped reproducing.
