Lake Titicaca Frog
Telmatobius culeus
The Lake Titicaca Frog is a large, fully aquatic amphibian endemic to the high-altitude Lake Titicaca basin on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Notable for its extremely loose, baggy skin, this frog uses folds of skin to maximize oxygen absorption in the cold, oxygen-poor waters โฆ
Did you know?
- The Lake Titicaca Frog is so uniquely adapted to its environment that it can suffocate if taken out of water for too long.
- The Lake Titicaca Frog is sometimes called the 'scrotum frog' due to its unusual loose skin. It rarely surfaces for air, relying almost entirely on cutaneous respiration. The species can perform a form of underwater 'push-up' to increase water flow over its body and enhance oxygen intake.
