Did you know?
- Lammergeiers have been observed using tools, such as stones, to break open tough bones and even tortoise shells, making them one of the rare tool-using birds.
- Bearded vultures are one of the few birds to actively colour themselves, and captive birds given access to red mud will stain themselves even with no rivals to impress. The bird's throat feathers form a black "beard" of bristles below the bill, hence the modern name. Reintroduction to the Alps, begun in 1986, has re-established a breeding population from zero, and lammergeiers now nest again in Switzerland, France, Italy and Austria after a century of absence.
