- Lhasa Apsos were believed to be reincarnations of Tibetan monks who were not yet ready to enter Nirvana.
- Lhasa Apsos were once considered sacred and were rarely given as gifts outside of Tibet. Their name comes from 'Lhasa,' Tibet's capital, and 'Apso,' which roughly means 'bearded' in Tibetan.
