Liger
Panthera leo ร Panthera tigris
A liger is the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger, and its most striking feature - enormous size, frequently over 3 m and 300 kg, larger than either parent - is not hybrid vigour but a genetic malfunction. In lions, where a female mates with several males, fathers are sโฆ
Did you know?
- Ligers are sterile in most cases, which means they cannot reproduce naturally.
- The tigon-and-liger size asymmetry is one of the clearest real-world demonstrations of the parental-conflict theory of genomic imprinting. Ligers often show faint tiger-like striping over a tawny lion base, and males may grow a modest, sparse mane. Because ligers keep growing and often have health problems, most reputable zoos and every serious conservation body refuse to breed them, and they exist mainly in roadside attractions.
