Did you know?
- Despite their name and lion-like mane, Lion-tailed Macaques are actually one of the smallest and most arboreal species of macaques.
- Lion-tailed macaques will not descend to the ground to cross a road, so populations separated by a single tarmac strip can be genetically isolated for decades - which is why rope and canopy bridges over Ghats highways have measurably restored gene flow. The cheek pouches let a foraging macaque carry a substantial fraction of its daily food away from a contested feeding tree. Unlike most macaques, they are quiet and hard to spot, and their loud call is a distinctive "coo" given mainly to keep the group together in dense canopy.
