- Little Blue Penguins often return to the exact same nesting site and even the same burrow year after year.
- Little penguins forage within about 20 km of the colony and dive typically to 10 to 30 m, but they can go past 60 m. They moult catastrophically once a year, replacing every feather at once over two to three weeks during which they cannot enter the water at all and must fast on land, losing up to half their body weight. Maremma guardian dogs have now protected the Middle Island colony for over a decade with no fox losses, one of the most unexpected conservation successes in Australia.
