- Loggerhead Sea Turtles are the most widespread of all marine turtles, yet their populations are declining globally due to human activities.
- Nest temperature determines sex, with warmer sand producing females, and rising sand temperatures on some beaches are now producing nests that are over 90 percent female. Loggerhead shells are miniature ecosystems, hosting over 100 species of epibiont - barnacles, algae, crabs and amphipods - and researchers have found entire communities living on a single turtle. The magnetic imprinting is so precise that shifts in the Earth's field over years measurably shift where turtles come ashore to nest.
