- Wild populations of Long-tailed Chinchillas survive in only a handful of small, isolated colonies in Chile, making them one of the rarest mammals in the world.
- Long-tailed Chinchillas have the densest fur of any land mammal, with up to 60 hairs growing from a single follicle. They take dust baths to keep their fur clean and free of oil and moisture. Their powerful hind legs allow them to leap distances of over 6 feet (1.8 meters).
