- A male's tail can be up to three times the length of its body during the breeding season, making it one of the longest tail-to-body ratios of any bird.
- Male Long-tailed Widowbirds perform elaborate aerial displays during the breeding season, flying low over the grass with their long tails trailing behind to attract females. The species gets its name from the resemblance of the breeding male's black plumage to traditional widow's clothing. Despite their showy tails, males remain agile flyers.
