- Despite being amphibians, Long-toed Salamanders are capable of surviving in relatively dry environments by retreating underground or into moist microhabitats.
- Long-toed Salamanders can regrow lost tails and toes if needed. Their larvae sometimes overwinter under ice, delaying metamorphosis until the following year. Adults can secrete a sticky, mildly toxic substance from their skin as a defense against predators.
