Lowland Streaked Tenrec
Hemicentetes semispinosus
Hemicentetes semispinosus of Madagascar's eastern rainforests looks like a small black-and-yellow hedgehog and is not remotely related to one - it is an afrotherian tenrec, and its resemblance to hedgehogs is convergence. What makes it genuinely unique is a set of specialised quโฆ
Did you know?
- Unlike most mammals, the Lowland Streaked Tenrec can communicate using sound made by its body quills, not its vocal cords.
- The stridulating quills are anatomically distinct from the defensive ones and produce sound in a way found nowhere else among mammals. Streaked tenrecs breed extremely fast for their size, maturing within weeks and producing large litters, an unusual life history among afrotherians. They will freeze, raise the crown quills into a spiked crest, and buck the head forward to embed barbs in a dog's or fossa's nose.
