Lumpfish
Cyclopterus lumpus
Cyclopterus lumpus is a lumpy, warty, near-globular fish of the cold North Atlantic that is a poor swimmer by design: the pelvic fins are fused into a broad adhesive disc on its underside, which it uses to clamp onto rocks and kelp and hold station against surge that would sweepโฆ
Did you know?
- Lumpfish are increasingly being used in aquaculture as 'cleaner fish' to control sea lice in salmon farms.
- The lumpfish's suction disc can hold it fast against a current strong enough to tear a limpet from a rock, and hauled-up lumpfish will clamp to the inside of a bucket. Their blood contains antifreeze proteins that let them tolerate water below zero. Cleaner-fish deployment made lumpfish, in barely a decade, one of the most farmed marine fish in northern Europe by number, despite almost nobody eating them.
