Madagascar Flying Fox
Pteropus rufus
The Madagascar Flying Fox is the largest bat species native to Madagascar, easily recognized by its fox-like face and large, leathery wings. These fruit bats are crucial pollinators and seed dispersers for Madagascar's forests, feeding on a variety of fruits, nectar, and flowers…
Did you know?
- Unlike most bats, Madagascar Flying Foxes do not echolocate—instead, they navigate and find food using their excellent vision and sense of smell.
- The Madagascar Flying Fox can have a wingspan of up to 1.25 meters, making it one of the largest bats in Africa. Unlike many other bats, it does not use echolocation but relies on keen eyesight and sense of smell. These bats play a key role in maintaining the health of Madagascar's forests by dispersing seeds over wide areas.
