Malayan Tapir
Tapirus indicus
The Malayan tapir is the largest of the four tapir species and is easily recognized by its distinctive black and white coloring, which helps it blend into the forest shadows and sunlight. Native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, this shy and solitary mammal spends much of itβ¦
Did you know?
- Despite their pig-like appearance, tapirs are more closely related to horses and rhinoceroses than to pigs.
- Malayan tapirs have a prehensile snout, similar to a mini-trunk, which helps them grab leaves and fruit. Their unique coloration acts as camouflage, breaking up their outline in the dappled light of the forest. Tapir calves are born with brown fur and white stripes and spots, providing them with excellent camouflage from predators.
