- Mandarinfish lack traditional fish scales and instead secrete a protective mucus coating that helps ward off disease and predators.
- Mandarinfish produce a foul-smelling, toxic mucus that protects them from predators. Unlike many colorful marine fish, their blue color comes from cellular pigment, not structural coloration. During mating, they perform a spectacular 'dance' where pairs rise together above the reef to spawn.
