Markhor
Capra falconeri
Capra falconeri is a wild goat of the mountains of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and northern India, and the male's horns are unmistakable: a pair of tight corkscrew spirals that can exceed 1.6 m along the twist, giving the animal its Persian-derived name, generally read as โฆ
Did you know?
- Despite being called 'snake eaters,' Markhor are strict herbivores and do not consume snakes.
- A single markhor trophy permit has sold for over 100,000 US dollars, and around 80 percent of that goes to local communities - the mechanism that turned poachers into rangers. The corkscrew horns are true spirals of bone and keratin, and males use them by rearing up and crashing down on each other. The snake-eating story appears to be entirely mythological, but it has stuck for centuries and gives the animal its name.
