- Marsupial moles are so adapted to underground life that their eyes are vestigial and covered with skin, making them functionally blind.
- Because the marsupial mole leaves no permanent burrow, scientists have never been able to survey it properly, and almost everything known about its ecology comes from Aboriginal knowledge and from opportunistic finds. Its neck vertebrae are fused, giving the head a rigid platform to push against sand. Genetic work places it, surprisingly, closer to bandicoots and bilbies than to any other marsupial group, and its lineage split from all other marsupials tens of millions of years ago.
