- Some mayfly species' entire adult lives last less than 24 hours, making them some of the shortest-lived animals on Earth.
- Mayflies are unique in that their adult form does not eat, as their sole purpose is to reproduce. They are the only insects to have a fully winged pre-adult stage called the subimago. Massive swarms of mayflies can sometimes be seen emerging at once, creating clouds that are visible for miles.
