Meerkat
Suricata suricatta
The meerkat (Suricata suricatta) is a small, highly social mammal belonging to the mongoose family, native to the arid regions of southern Africa, including the Kalahari Desert and Namib Desert. These creatures are easily recognized by their slender bodies, which measure 24โ35 cโฆ
Did you know?
- A meerkat mob can have up to 50 members, all working together to protect and raise their young.
- Meerkats are renowned for their cooperative behavior, living in clans that can number up to 50 individuals, where they share responsibilities such as babysitting and foraging. They have a complex vocal communication system, with over 30 distinct calls used to coordinate group activities and alert each other to predators. Unlike many other mammals, meerkats are immune to certain venoms, including those of scorpions and snakes, which allows them to include these creatures in their diet. A common misconception is that meerkats are nocturnal; however, they are diurnal animals, spending their days actively searching for food and returning to their burrows at night.
