- Despite their alligator-like appearance, Mexican alligator lizards are harmless and are more closely related to typical lizards than to crocodilians.
- Mexican alligator lizards are excellent climbers, using their prehensile tails for balance and grip. Their vibrant green coloration provides camouflage among mosses and leaves. Unlike many lizards, they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs.
