- This toad only comes above ground for a few days each year, timing its emergence with heavy rains to breed in ephemeral pools.
- The Mexican Burrowing Toad can inflate its body when threatened, making it appear larger to predators. It uses its specialized tongue and snout to feed almost exclusively on ants and termites underground. Despite its unusual appearance, its closest relatives went extinct millions of years ago.
