- The Xoloitzcuintli was named after Xolotl, the Aztec god of lightning and death, and was traditionally believed to guide souls to the underworld.
- Xoloitzcuintlis are one of the oldest and rarest dog breeds in the world, dating back over 3,000 years. Their body warmth was believed by ancient peoples to have healing properties. The breed is recognized as a national treasure in Mexico.
