- Despite being called 'desert rats' in some regions, Mongolian gerbils are not true rats and belong to a distinct subfamily of rodents.
- Gerbils are incredible diggers, able to create intricate burrow systems that protect them from predators and harsh weather. Unlike many rodents, gerbils have very little body odor, which makes them appealing as pets. They also communicate through a variety of vocalizations and foot drumming.
