- Unlike many reef fish, the Moorish idol is the sole extant species in its family, Zanclidae.
- The Moorish idol is believed to bring happiness and good luck in many cultures. Its long trailing dorsal fin is called a 'filament' and can be as long as its body. Despite their wide distribution, they are rarely seen in large groups, making their sighting special for divers.
