- Despite their size, mountain lions cannot roar; instead, they communicate through whistles, chirps, hisses, and growls.
- Mountain lions cannot roar; a fully ossified hyoid means they purr like a house cat. They are more closely related to the cheetah than to the leopard or jaguar. Longer hind legs power vertical leaps of roughly five metres. Despite the stories, no melanistic "black panther" mountain lion has ever been documented.
