- The Mountain Pygmy Possum was believed extinct until its rediscovery in 1966, when a living specimen was found in a ski lodge basement in Victoria, Australia.
- Mountain Pygmy Possums are the only Australian marsupials known to hibernate under snow for up to seven months. Their populations are closely tied to the annual migration of the Bogong moth, a key food source. They possess a unique ability among possums to store fat in their tails as energy reserves.
