- The Mountain Tapir is considered a 'flagship species' for Andean forest conservation due to its ecological importance and endangered status.
- Mountain Tapirs have a prehensile snout that helps them grasp leaves and fruit. Unlike other tapirs, their thick fur protects them from cold mountain temperatures. They are sometimes called 'woolly tapirs' because of their dense, wool-like coat.
