- The qiviut wool shed by musk oxen in spring is eight times warmer than sheep’s wool and is highly prized for making luxury garments.
- Musk oxen have a two-layered coat, with a long outer layer and an exceptionally warm underlayer called qiviut, which is one of the warmest natural fibers known. During predator attacks, adults form a protective ring around their young, presenting their horns outward. Despite their name, musk oxen are more closely related to goats and sheep than to oxen.
