- The Nazca Booby was only recognized as a separate species from the Masked Booby in 2002 due to genetic and morphological differences.
- Non-breeding adults at Galapagos colonies visit unattended chicks and subject them to prolonged aggressive and sexual harassment; chicks that experience it are more likely to become harassing adults themselves, one of the few documented cycles of intergenerational abuse in a wild animal. Boobies have no external nostrils — they are sealed shut, an adaptation to high-speed diving — so the birds breathe through the corners of the mouth. The name booby comes from the Spanish bobo, meaning fool, because the birds were tame enough for sailors to walk up and club.
