Nilgai are one of the few large wild herbivores that have successfully adapted to agricultural landscapes and sometimes become a pest to crops in India.
Nilgai are capable of running at speeds up to 48 km/h (30 mph) to escape predators. The name 'Nilgai' means 'blue cow' in Hindi due to the males' bluish-grey coloration. They are known for their unique, low-pitched vocalizations, especially when alarmed.
