- The Nilgiri Tahr is the state animal of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
- Nilgiri Tahrs are the only mountain goat species native to southern India. Males are called 'saddlebacks' due to the silvery patch that appears on their backs. During the monsoon, they descend to lower elevations in search of fresh grass.
