- The Nine-banded Armadillo is the only mammal other than humans known to regularly contract and carry leprosy.
- Nine-banded armadillos can jump nearly 1 meter straight into the air when startled. They are one of the few mammals known to give birth to identical quadruplets from a single fertilized egg. Their name refers to the number of movable bands in the armor on their back.
