- The Nine-banded Armadillo is the only mammal other than humans known to regularly contract and carry leprosy.
- The armadillo has expanded its range dramatically since crossing the Rio Grande around 1850, reaching Illinois and North Carolina, and cold winters — not predators — are the main brake on how far north it can go. Its teeth are simple peg-like structures with no enamel and no roots, and it grows no incisors or canines at all. Delayed implantation means a female captured and held alone can give birth to identical quadruplets up to two years after her last contact with a male.
