- The blue coloration of their tongue is thought to mimic the appearance of venomous animals, helping to deter would-be attackers.
- Northern Blue-tongued Skinks are known for their striking blue tongues, which they display to startle predators. They give birth to live young, unlike many other lizard species that lay eggs. These skinks are also able to drop their tails as a last-resort defense mechanism, though they rarely do so.
