- Unlike most salamanders, Northern Dusky Salamanders use a unique jaw-snapping technique to capture fast-moving prey.
- Northern Dusky Salamanders can drop their tails as a defense mechanism when threatened. Unlike many salamanders, they lack lungs and breathe primarily through their skin and mouth lining. Their larvae are aquatic and can remain in water for up to a year before metamorphosing.
