- Despite their massive size, Northern Elephant Seals can travel thousands of kilometers in a single migration between feeding and breeding grounds.
- Male northern elephant seals develop a large, inflatable proboscis that helps them make loud roaring noises during the breeding season. They spend about 80% of their lives in the open ocean, often diving continuously for weeks at a time. Pups are born with a black coat that molts to a silver-grey after a few months.
