- Unlike most woodpeckers, Northern Flickers are frequently seen on the ground searching for ants, which make up to 45% of their diet.
- Northern Flickers are one of the few woodpecker species that often feed on the ground, primarily eating ants. Their drumming is not only used for foraging but also for communication and territory establishment. The two main North American forms—Yellow-shafted and Red-shafted Flickers—interbreed where their ranges overlap.
