- Male Northern Fur Seals can fast for over two months during the breeding season while aggressively defending their territories.
- A fur seal thermoregulates by holding a flipper out of the water while floating, because the flippers are the only part of the body not insulated and thus the only place it can dump or absorb heat. Pups are born black and moult to silver-grey at about three months, and a mother returning from a week at sea locates her own pup among thousands by call and then confirms by smell. Northern fur seals spend seven to eight months a year continuously at sea without ever coming ashore, sleeping on the surface in a characteristic posture with flippers folded over the belly.
