Did you know?
- Fewer than 350 Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats remain in the wild, making them one of the rarest mammals on Earth.
- For decades the entire species lived in one small patch of Queensland, and fell to roughly thirty animals. A predator-proof fence was built only after dingoes killed a large share of the survivors. Its pouch faces backwards so digging does not fill it with dirt, and its cartilage-armoured rump plugs the burrow behind it. It still makes the cube-shaped droppings unique to wombats.
