- Despite being completely blind, olms can detect electrical fields and minute chemical changes in the water to locate prey.
- Olms can survive up to 10 years without eating by lowering their metabolic rate. Unlike most amphibians, they remain in their larval form throughout their lives, a phenomenon called neoteny.
