- Painted Turtle hatchlings can survive winter in frozen mud, enduring body temperatures below freezing without lasting harm.
- Painted Turtles can remain submerged for long periods, especially during hibernation when they absorb oxygen through their skin. They are among the most widespread native turtles in North America, found from southern Canada to northern Mexico. Hatchlings can survive being frozen for short periods thanks to special adaptations.
