Did you know?
- The Panamanian Golden Frog is believed to be extinct in the wild, with only a few individuals surviving in captive breeding programs and conservation facilities.
- Panamanian folklore held that the toads turned to gold when they died, and a golden frog sighting was a sign of good luck β the figures are still sold as souvenirs across the country. Hand-waving is used in both aggression and courtship, and captive toads will wave at their own reflections. Because the wild population is gone, every surviving individual is descended from animals collected in a scramble ahead of the advancing chytrid wave in the mid-2000s, and reintroduction still awaits a way to make wild streams survivable.
