- Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals in the world, with their scales and meat highly sought after in illegal wildlife trade.
- Pangolin scales are keratin — the same material as your fingernails — so the medicinal trade in them is baseless. Its tongue can be longer than its body and anchors near the pelvis, not in the mouth. It has no teeth, and grinds insects in a gizzard-like stomach using swallowed stones. Rolling into a ball defeats lions but makes it trivially easy for poachers to pick up — it is the world's most trafficked mammal.
