Panther Chameleon
Furcifer pardalis
Furcifer pardalis does not change colour by moving pigment around, which is what almost every popular account claims. A 2015 study from Geneva showed that the chameleon has a lattice of guanine nanocrystals in a layer of specialised cells called iridophores, and by relaxing or tโฆ
Did you know?
- A Panther Chameleon's tongue can extend up to twice its body length to catch prey with astonishing speed and accuracy.
- Chameleons have a second, deeper iridophore layer full of larger crystals that reflects near-infrared, which appears to be a passive heat shield rather than a signalling system. Each eye moves independently through nearly 180 degrees horizontally, but when prey is spotted both swivel forward to give stereo vision for the tongue strike. Males reach about 45 cm and are roughly twice the size of females, and a wild panther chameleon rarely lives beyond 5 to 7 years.
