- Unlike true nautiluses, the Paper Nautilus is actually an octopus, not a close relative of the shelled nautiloids.
- Female Paper Nautiluses create a paper-thin shell solely for egg protection, not for living inside. The males are among the smallest adult cephalopods, often less than 2 cm, and lack the famous shell entirely. Argonauts are known for their ability to trap air in their shells to help with buoyancy.
