- There are estimated to be fewer than 400 mature Philippine Eagles left in the wild, making it one of the world's rarest birds of prey.
- The eagle hunts by still-hunting from a perch and by moving through the canopy in a series of short flights, sometimes working in pairs so that one bird distracts a troop of monkeys while the other takes an animal from behind. The Philippine Eagle Center in Davao has bred the species in captivity since 1992, but releasing captive-bred eagles into forest that is still being logged remains the fundamental obstacle. Its nest is a platform up to 1.5 m across, built high in an emergent dipterocarp, and pairs will reuse and add to the same nest for years.
